Symptoms
Often mistaken for acne, natural skin coloring, or other skin conditions, rosacea’s symptoms can include some or all of the following:
- Facial redness
You will commonly see consistent redness around the central part of your face, with the small blood vessels on your nose and cheeks becoming visible.
- Swollen, red bumps
Rosacea can cause small, red bumps to appear on the face, similar in appearance to acne. These bumps may have pus and cause the skin to feel hot and sensitive.
- Broken blood vessels
Those with rosacea will easily be able to see broken blood vessels under the skin.
- Irritated Skin
Rosacea can cause irritated skin that may be swollen, sensitive, stinging, burning, dry, rough, scaly, or even oily.
- Enlarged nose
Rosacea can cause the skin on the nose to thicken, making the nose appear bulbous or larger than usual. Often, this condition is more common in men than women.
- Eye issues
Rosacea can additionally cause ocular rosacea, a condition where the eyes become irritated, swollen, and dry with swollen red eyelids. Your eyes may become watery, itchy, sensitive to light, or have diminished vision.
If you are unsure that your symptoms are rosacea, you can look to Waccamaw Dermatology as your South Carolina medical dermatology center. Our experienced physicians will diagnosis and offer various treatment plans to help ease your symptoms.
Causes
Acne is caused when a pore is filled with enough excess oil, dead skin cells, and/or bacteria. Each pore is open to a follicle. The follicle is made up of a hair and an oil-producing gland. The sebum (oil) is released from the gland to help form a slightly greasy surface film of the skin. This process can trigger an inflammatory reaction to produce acne when:
- Too much oil is produced
- Dead skin cells gather in your pores
- Bacteria build up occurs
