Busting Myths About Fillers and Injectables

Busting 7 Common Myths About Fillers and Injectables

There is a lot of information out there around fillers and injectables. Unfortunately, not everything you read is accurate. Below, we dispel seven of the most common myths.

Myth 1: Injectables Are Painful

They’re not painful, but they can be uncomfortable for some. However, in some instances, we can use topical numbing cream that can take the “edge” away.

Myth 2: Botox Can Replace a Facelift

“The short answer is that it can’t,” notes Alexandra Kroeff, Certified Physician Assistant at Waccamaw Dermatology Skin Institute. “Botox can help minimize the appearance of dynamic and static wrinkles. A facelift helps remove the excess loose skin from loss of facial structures such as fat pads and bone mass.”

Myth 3: The Results Are Permanent

The results are temporary. Neuromodulators, such as Botox, Dysport, and Daxxify, can last anywhere from three to six months. Dermal Fillers can last up to a year, sometimes longer depending on the product used.

Myth 4: You Can Get the Same Results with Skincare Products

“You won’t, but they can affect the outcome of any of these injections,” says Kroeff. “Also, keep in mind that a good skincare regimen will assist in many different processes, including neocollagenesis (a process that can stimulate collagen growth) and hyperpigmentation of the skin, which helps the skin look younger.”

For optimal results and to extend the life of your injectable treatment, use a topical hyaluronic acid serum, such as SkinCeuticals HA Intensifier. This will amplify the skin’s hyaluronic acid levels and help improve the visible appearance of firmness and facial plumpness.

Myth 5: Anyone Can Inject Fillers

Only licensed medical professionals can perform injections.

Myth 6: Treatments like Botox and Dysport Are all the Same

“They are absolutely not,” she says. “Although all share the goal of helping us look refreshed and fight the signs of aging, that’s where the similarities end. During your cosmetic consult, make sure to ask your clinician about the mechanisms of action and implications for these different cosmetic procedures.”

Myth 7: Fillers Can Damage My Skin

If done right, fillers should help reduce wrinkles and smooth your skin, rather than causing skin problems. Keep in mind that fillers won’t prevent your skin from aging. They can help with mild-to-moderate skin concerns. If you have loose, sagging skin that needs to be addressed, you may want to consider a more permanent solution, such as a facelift or neck lift.
