Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy

Effective, non-surgical skin cancer treatment from board-certified dermatologists across our Myrtle Beach, Charleston, and Wilmington locations.

What is Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy?

Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy or IG-SRT is a non-invasive treatment used to effectively treat common types of skin cancer—such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma—without the need for surgery. It delivers a cure rate of up to 97%.

At Waccamaw Dermatology, we offer advanced IG-SRT, which uses high-resolution ultrasound to precisely target tumors while sparing healthy tissue. This virtually painless treatment is performed in-office, requires no anesthesia, and results in minimal downtime.

IG-SRT can be a good alternative for surgery, and may be the right treatment option for you.

What to Expect: Step-by-Step Guide to IG-SRT

Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy uses low-dose, targeted radiation guided by ultrasound imaging to treat skin cancer. Below is a step-by-step overview of what you can expect during the full course of treatment, from diagnosis to follow-up.

Step 1: Biopsy

A Waccamaw Dermatology provider performs a biopsy to collect a small sample of the suspicious skin lesion. This is the crucial first step to accurately diagnose whether the lesion is cancerous and determine its type.

Step 2: Biopsy Results

Once the lab analyzes your biopsy sample, you’ll be contacted with your results. If skin cancer is detected, we’ll discuss your treatment options, including Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy (IG-SRT) versus surgery, so you can choose the best path forward.

Step 3: Verification of Benefits (VOB)

Before treatment, our team verifies your insurance coverage to determine what costs will be covered. This process can typically takes 2 to 3 weeks, so we appreciate your patience during this time.

Step 4: Decision & Scheduling

After confirming insurance benefits, we’ll provide you with a clear cost estimate and discuss payment options. Once you approve, we’ll schedule your simulation appointment, which kicks off your treatment plan.

Step 5: Simulation (Sim) Appointment

Your first treatment visit includes signing consent forms and taking clinical photos for documentation. We use ultrasound imaging to precisely map the treatment area and carefully mark the skin to target radiation accurately.

Step 6: Treatment Sessions

Each treatment day begins with a skin assessment and ultrasound to monitor progress. The radiation is then delivered to the targeted area. Your dermatologist reviews your progress every five sessions to ensure the best possible outcome.

Step 7: Follow-Up Visit

Approximately six weeks after your final treatment, you’ll return for a follow-up appointment and another ultrasound. Additional booster treatments may be recommended if any cancer cells remain.

Step 8: Boosters (If Needed)

In rare cases, ultrasound imaging post-treatment may reveal residual cancer cells. If so, we’ll administer a few extra radiation treatments (boosters) to fully eliminate any remaining abnormal tissue and ensure long-term skin health.
