From Mohs surgery to innovative therapies like topical treatments, intralesional injections, and immunotherapy, we’re here to guide you with compassionate, world-class care. Discover how we match treatments to your needs, the latest advancements, and why trusting Waccamaw Dermatology can make all the difference for your skin health.

The Power of Individualized Skin Cancer Treatment

At Waccamaw Dermatology Skin Cancer Institute, we reject the one-size-fits-all approach to skin cancer care. Every patient’s cancer and situation are unique, and we prioritize placing you at the heart of medical decision-making. Our goal? To match the treatment to the individual, ensuring you feel confident, supported, and empowered. As Dr. Coakley, a Board-Certified Mohs Surgeon, explains, “I treat and cure thousands of skin cancers with Mohs Surgery annually, but we offer a variety of options beyond surgery—topical treatments, radiation, intralesional injections, immunotherapy, and more—to address your specific needs.”

This personalized approach not only maximizes effectiveness but also minimizes discomfort, aligning with our commitment to trust, clarity, and superior outcomes for every patient.

Topical Treatments: A Non-Invasive Skin Cancer Solution

For low-grade, superficial skin cancers, topical treatments offer a less invasive alternative to surgery. These prescription creams or gels are applied directly to the affected area, targeting cancer cells without the risks associated with surgery, such as scars, infections, or bleeding. “When appropriate, topical treatments are an excellent option,” says Dr. Coakley. “They’re ideal for patients seeking a gentler approach, avoiding the downtime or healing concerns of surgical procedures.”

The key benefits include minimal invasiveness, reduced risk of complications, and convenience for those with less aggressive cancers. However, your provider will assess whether this option suits your specific cancer type and stage, ensuring you receive the best care tailored to your situation.

Intralesional Injections: Targeted Therapy for Specific Skin Cancers

Intralesional injections deliver chemotherapy directly into skin cancer lesions, offering a targeted solution for certain less aggressive cancers, like keratoacanthomas on the lower leg. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, these injections don’t cause systemic side effects like hair loss or nausea. Studies show cure rates of 70–80%, and if needed, the treatment can be repeated. “This may be ideal for active individuals who want to avoid surgery downtime—say, skipping their golf game—or those concerned about wound healing,” notes Elizabeth Watson.

This approach is particularly beneficial for patients with low-grade cancers who prioritize maintaining their lifestyle while receiving effective treatment, showcasing Waccamaw Dermatology’s commitment to personalized, patient-centered care.

Immunotherapy Advances: Boosting Your Body’s Defenses

Immunotherapy represents a groundbreaking advancement in skin cancer treatment, especially for patients unsuitable for surgery or radiation. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, which can harm healthy cells, immunotherapy enhances your immune system to specifically detect and destroy cancer cells. “We collaborate with local oncologists to provide immunotherapy for patients with locally advanced or metastatic skin cancers,” Dr. Coakley explains. “It’s a powerful tool, working in harmony with your body’s natural defenses.”

While immunotherapy is often combined with other treatments for complex cases, it’s transforming outcomes for patients with advanced skin cancers, offering hope and precision in care.

Combining Therapies: When Immunotherapy Meets Other Treatments

For patients with locally advanced (very large) or metastatic (spread) skin cancer, immunotherapy is rarely a standalone treatment. These individuals often require a multi-faceted approach, integrating immunotherapy with surgery, radiation, or other therapies to achieve the best outcomes. “Our team carefully evaluates each case to determine the most effective combination, ensuring comprehensive care,” says Watson. This collaborative strategy underscores Waccamaw Dermatology’s dedication to addressing even the most challenging skin cancer cases with expertise and compassion.

Which Skin Cancers Respond Best to Alternative Therapies?

Not all skin cancers are treated the same. Alternative therapies like topicals, intralesional injections, and immunotherapy are best suited for specific types and stages, such as low-grade or superficial cancers. Your provider will rely on your biopsy pathology report—interpreted by a dermatopathologist under a microscope—to recommend the ideal treatment. “The details of your cancer, including type and stage, guide our decisions,” Dr. Coakley adds. “We ensure every option is tailored to your unique needs, offering clarity and confidence.”

Comparing Side Effects: Alternative Treatments vs. Surgery or Radiation

Every skin cancer treatment has its pros and cons, and we’ll walk you through the risks and benefits based on your situation. Mohs surgery, considered the gold standard, boasts the highest cure rates and is performed by our expertly trained providers under Dr. Coakley’s guidance. However, alternative treatments like topicals, injections, or immunotherapy may reduce risks like scarring or systemic side effects, making them suitable for certain patients.

For example, topical treatments minimize surgical risks, while intralesional injections avoid chemotherapy’s broader side effects. Immunotherapy, though effective, may cause immune-related reactions, which we monitor closely. Radiation, while effective, can lead to skin changes over time. Our warm, knowledgeable team ensures you understand these trade-offs, prioritizing your comfort and long-term health.

How We Choose the Best Treatment for You

At Waccamaw Dermatology Skin Cancer Institute, we consider every aspect of your health and cancer when recommending treatment. Factors include:

    • Your age, overall health, and medical conditions.
    • Medications you’re taking and their potential interactions.
    • Your activity level and lifestyle preferences.
    • The cancer’s type, stage, and location, as detailed in your pathology report.

This holistic approach ensures we deliver the most suitable, effective care, making you feel valued and supported throughout your journey.
