At Waccamaw Dermatology, our dermatology providers use their clinical experience to evaluate rashes. If needed, a part of the area will be removed and sent to our in-house comprehensive dermatopathology laboratory for microscopic diagnosis. The results generated will then be utilized in creating the best individualized strategy for management.
This microscopic image is of Hailey-Hailey disease, a rare genetic disorder that is due to a mutation in a specific gene that creates a protein that is essential for the proper health of skin. The disorder becomes apparent after puberty, usually by the third or fourth decade, but symptoms can develop at any age.
Hailey-Hailey is characterized by blisters and erosions most often affecting the neck, armpits, skin folds and genitals. It is caused by a genetic change (mutation) in the ATP2C1 gene. This change results in a loss in “stickiness” between skin cells and this leads to blisters. The risk of passing the abnormal gene from an affected parent to an offspring is 50% for each pregnancy. The risk is the same for males and females. According to one estimate, the disorder affects 1 in 50,000 people in the general population.
In many cases, the rash may itch or cause a burning sensation. The lesions can separate leaving painful, cracked skin. Secondary infection of the skin lesions can also occur and may cause an unpleasant odor. Correct diagnosis followed by appropriate management is key to managing morbidity.
Waccamaw Dermatology is one of few dermatology practices nationally that provides true “end to end” dermatology services from; your initial examination, to microscopic evaluation, and then definitive treatment with our specialty and sub-specialty board certified physicians.
